Australia's captain Set to Play a Major Role in the Ashes

Test match action

The Australian skipper has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors the selector has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's Ashes series.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of participating.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations involved, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," the selector added.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he will feature a major part. Hopefully it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."

Injury History

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
