Our Premier Album of 2025: The Artist's Lux Takes the Top Place.

Initially, this work may look more like a difficult scholarly quiz than the latest pop record from an artist whose previous hit was a collaboration with an international pop icon. Divided into four distinct parts and voiced in 13 tongues, this is a breathtaking orchestral-influenced album exploring feminine mystery, spiritual transcendence, and corporal change, often through the lens of various women saints. The dissolution of a romance—a theme handled with grounded openness elsewhere—soars upwards on this record, carried by the constant presence of a full symphony orchestra and contributions from an award-winning songwriter within a vast roll call of contributors. The pure audacity by itself makes the efforts of contemporary pop stars seem quite small.

Rising Above Scholarly Exercise

That Lux manages to transcend dry academic chin-stroking feels nearly miraculous, and sole praise belonging to Rosalía. Although it's not the first time album to fuse the past with the present, its ambitions feel far greater here, with the balancing act far more precarious. What truly raises her fourth album, outside of its complex tunes, dense arrangements, and inherent theatricality, proves to be an essential spirit of playfulness. Much like the legendary artist during her height, there is a wondrous quality to Rosalía's singing which sweeps you up in its whirlwind. When she is breaking hearts apart, the listener still desire to be alongside her for the journey.

A Signature Moment of Joy

That exuberant energy comes forth clearly on a stirring Italian song inspired by Saint Clare. It bathes in a sorrowful melancholy for several moments. Then, everything drops away, to reveal we hear a gleeful giggle and a comment prior to a comically exaggerated string surge thuds in like cartoonish impact. The track then shifts to the wild track featuring racing orchestration, an imposing choral group, and a surprise role from the artist Björk.

"The charm with this album is that the listener rarely quite understand—or even want to predict—what you will go next."

Almost every song finishes in a completely different point than where it started. One moment examines the transient nature of fame with a featherlight symphony before disintegrating in digital chaos. Another, a song that recalls the artist's earlier rhythmic work starts out dark and brooding, with menacing vocals, until sudden flamenco rhythms and a heavenly chorus arrive to soften its rough corners.

The Bridge Between Art and Accessibility

Another crucial balancing act of Lux involves navigating the gap of radical innovation and broad accessibility. It is no coincidence that the album has achieved the artist's highest-charting work to break into the Top 5 of key charts: at its core a collection of truly catchy pop songs. A song performed primarily in English swells around a refrain that feels to gather more and more nagging melodies while it spirals skyward. That feat is echoed on a different expansive ballad that expands and contracts, intertwining multiple melodies as a complex weave.

  • A dance-infused song charms with its jaunty, theatrical flair and an anthemic hook.
  • Lyrically, it shares with cultural impact of other heartbreak songs, lambasting an ex- partner labeled an "psychological bully".
  • Across these tracks, the singing carry a painted-on smile, akin to a fairy-tale character concealing a knife: "Top prize in being a scoundrel / You have the podium of disappointment."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Ears

Lux is pop on a grand scale, a hungry grasp for high Art in an era of looming AI-generated sameness. It eschews self-absorption in favor of glorious elevation, creating a dramatic spectacle that skillfully manages its own inherent ridiculousness. It is an abundant source of buried gems that requires patience to fully explore but never seem like a chore. While some big pop albums of 2025 felt like feasting on scraps, Lux is a sumptuous banquet where the characters at it, some intoxicated on sacred drink, flutter between discussions about historical figures, the galvanizing feeling of heartbreaking grief, and common stories about useless men. In essence, it's a contemporary musical from pop's truly endlessly inventive visionary.
