Each time a major awards ceremony nears, there’s always an outcry to include additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.
Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles published annually that have no home at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything in 2014
- A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
